Cissy Houston, the late Whitney Houston's mother, and grandmother to Whitney's only child Bobbi Kristina Brown, who has been in a coma since being hospitalised on January 31 this year, after being discovered unconscious in a bathtub in her home, has spoken about her granddaughter's condition to PEOPLE magazine.

In February, doctors attempted to remove Bobbi Kristina from her medically induced coma, but put her back into the comatose state after she experienced violent seizures.

Bobbi Kristina's father, singer Bobby Brown, told a crowd at his concert in Dallas on Saturday that Bobbi was "awake".

Now, Cissy Houston, is clarifying these comments by Bobby Brown.

"I have just returned from visiting my granddaughter Bobbi Kristina in the hospital and while she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive," Houston said in a statement to PEOPLE.

"Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me.

"We can only trust in God for a miracle at this time. Keep us in your prayers."
